Texaco Sportstars Bursaries attract record applications
Dublin, 9th October 2009 - A record 582 sports clubs from all of the 32 counties have submitted applications for this year's Texaco Sportstars Bursaries. The largest number came from clubs in Dublin City and County (118) followed by Cork (73), Antrim (51, Meath (30) and Galway (26). Of the total, 15 percent of applications came from clubs in Northern Ireland.
Some 40 sporting disciplines are represented amongst the applicants. Soccer clubs made up the highest number (223) followed by GAA (82), basketball (37), swimming (30), rugby (29), athletics (26), hockey (16), cycling (15) and special needs (14). Minority sports represented include American football, karting, tug-of-war, kick boxing, ice hockey, diving and canoeing.
Open to sports clubs of all kind, the scheme is now in its third year having been launched initially to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Texaco Sportstars Awards.
Over €120,000 has been allocated to the scheme from which a total of twenty-five sports clubs stand to benefit - twenty from the Republic of Ireland and five from Northern Ireland. In the Republic of Ireland, bursaries will be distributed of €5,000 each and in Northern Ireland, bursaries of £3,500 each will be offered. Judging is currently under way and winners will receive their awards at an event to be held in Dublin on Thursday 22 October
