Famed Kilkenny Hurler Eddie Keher enters Texaco Hall of Fame
DUBLIN, IRELAND 14TH NOVEMBER 2009 - In a year when the GAA is celebrating its 125th anniversary, one of the most admired hurling exponents, the legendary Kilkenny hurler Eddie Keher, has been chosen as the worthy recipient of this year's 2009 Texaco Sportstars Hall of Fame Award.
In a career that lasted 18 years, Eddie Keher, won six All-Ireland senior titles, ten Leinster titles, nine Railway Cup medals and three National League medals. He scored 36 goals and 307 points in 50 championship games, a feat yet to be equalled.
From the Rower-Inistioge club, he won five consecutive All-Star awards and, in 1972, was Texaco Sportstar of the Year award winner for Hurling. In 1984 he was named in the Team of the Century and, in 1999, the Hurling Team of the Millennium.
Away from the hurling fields, with Father Tom Murphy and Garda Eamonn Doyle, he set up the No Name Club in 1978. Devoted to providing alternative venues to pubs for young people, the club now has over 30 branches across the country.
Commenting on his entry into the Texaco Hall of Fame, Chevron Country Chairman Enda Riney described Eddie as ‘one of the most admired figures in the history of hurling whose exploits on and off the field are an inspiration to all, not least those many up and coming young players of whom Kilkenny has more than a few.’
His award will be presented at a ceremony, which takes place in Dublin on Thursday evening, 19 November, at which An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen TD will be Guest of Honour.
