51st TEXACO SPORTSTARS SHORTLIST ANNOUNCED
DUBLIN, IRELAND 5 NOVEMBER 2008 - A shortlist of sixteen sports from which the winners of this year's 51st Texaco Sportstars will be chosen has been announced. They are: athletics, boxing, camogie, cricket, cycling, gaelic football, golf, horse racing, hurling, ladies football, motor sport, rowing, rugby, sailing, soccer and swimming.
This year, the scope of this annual event has been extended to include a new award - the Texaco Young Sportstar Award aimed at a younger generation of sports stars of 18 years and under. The winner of this new award will be announced shortly along with the eight other Texaco Sportstars Award winners.
Commenting, Enda Riney, Country Chairman for Chevron, which owns the Texaco brand, said “the new Texaco Young Sportstar Award is an initiative designed to recognise success on the part of young people and encourage them to become sportstars of the future.”
“It also underpins the important contribution which the Texaco Sportstars awards can make in fostering future sporting excellence”, he said.
Awards will be presented at a ceremony to be held in Dublin on Wednesday, 19th November at which An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen TD will officiate. Also being presented on that evening will be the Texaco Hall of Fame Award, which goes to a prominent sports personality from the past.
