Irish sports clubs to benefit from unique bursary
Sports bursary launched to coincide with 50th anniversary of
Texaco Sportstars Awards
DUBLIN, IRELAND 17 September 2007 - Chevron (Ireland) Limited has launched a unique sports bursary to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Texaco Sportstars Awards which occurs this year.
Funded to the tune of €50,000, the Texaco Sportstars Bursary is open to all sports clubs across Ireland. The bursary will be distributed in thirteen awards - ten of which will go to deserving sports clubs in the Republic of Ireland in amounts of €5,000 each and three of which will go to clubs in Northern Ireland in amounts of £3,500 each. Awards will be selected by an independent judging panel.
To apply for the bursary, clubs must complete an official application form currently available through all Texaco service stations and on-line at www.texaco.ie/bursary. In framing their entry, successful clubs must demonstrate why they deserve a bursary and how they would spend the award amount if successful.
Submissions for a Texaco Sportstars Bursary will be considered by an independent panel of sports experts. Their decision in choosing the thirteen successful clubs will be based on the worthiness of the submissions and how deserving each recipient club would be.
Launched in 1957, the Texaco Sportstars Awards hold a pre-eminent position, recognising and celebrating the achievements of Irish sports legends across all sports over the last half-century - from Christy Ring to DJ Carey; Kevin Heffernan to Colm Cooper, Mary Peters to Sonia O'Sullivan, George Best to Roy Keane, Mike Gibson to Brian O'Driscoll.
“The Texaco Sportstars Awards are the premier forum for celebrating the achievements of Irish sports men and women,” said Declan McAndrew, Country Chairman, Chevron (Ireland) Ltd. “To mark their 50th anniversary, we feel it appropriate to launch the Texaco Sportstars Bursary which will support and encourage local sports talent thereby investing at grassroots level in the sports stars of the future”.
Chief Executive of the Irish Sports Council, John Treacy, Olympic athlete and former Texaco Sportstars Awards winner, was high in his praise for the initiative. “It is great to see the business world backing the unstinting efforts of so many people who give freely of their time in the promotion of sport at all levels. There isn't a club in the country that wouldn't want a financial boost and here is a promotion that will help them. Texaco have been good for sport for 50 years and must be commended on this celebratory undertaking.”
Full details of the Texaco Sportstars Bursary are contained in brochures available at all Texaco service stations and on-line at www.texaco.ie/bursary. Applications must be submitted between September 17 and October 26. Successful applicants will be notified in November 2007.
